We, the socialist-democratic Students' Association
DIE LINKE.SDS are organizing a congress! From 28-30.
October 2022 we will gather 2000 young people who want to change the world in Leipzig. Why are we doing this?
Years of protests by Fridays for Future have brought the devastating consequences of climate change and the urgency of change into the broad consciousness of society. With the new traffic light government, climate and sustainability issues seemed to have moved to the center of power - but effective action to curb the climate crisis has so far failed to materialize. The ongoing pandemic and the war in Ukraine are pushing the need for fundamental rethinking into the background. But it is precisely these examples that show how urgently change is needed! And in our eyes, this is not achieved with a few reforms. No, we need a system change!
Crises such as pandemics, scarce raw materials, imperialist wars and the associated flight movements are increasingly accumulating under capitalism. And all the consequences and costs are carried out on the backs of the population.
It is our conviction as the student association Die Linke.SDS that things cannot go on like this. So are large parts of the climate movement: "System Change, not Climate Change" has become a recurring demand in the climate movement. But what does "system change" mean in concrete terms? And above all, how do we achieve it?
Many activists are looking for new ways to achieve real change outside of parliaments. Because time is pressing and the German government cannot be relied upon: the consequences of the climate crisis are already being felt - not only on other continents, but also here on the ground. The transformation of industry has already begun. However, it is being imposed from above, and is neither social nor truly sustainable. We need to counter this with a social-ecological transformation that is truly worthy of the name. In practical terms, this means that new alliances are needed between employees and the climate movement. And it is clear to us that these must be built and strengthened through political work from below. We therefore want a labor turn of the climate movement and a climate turn of the trade unions in order to fight together for social and ecological justice.
For us it is clear: Those who want to fill "System Change" with life need a place to broaden, develop and network. With the System Change Congress we want to create such a place.
With us, therefore, one can learn something about the fundamental connection between capitalism and the climate crisis, but also look into the depths of the debate about socio-ecological transformation and ecosocialism. All kinds of current issues will be critically examined and discussed by activists, scientists, trade unionists and politicians. But it is also about becoming stronger. At the System Change Congress, there will be opportunities to take organizing seminars, participate in workshops, and last but not least, network for new alliances on the ground.
Our congress is
1. training & debate around capitalism, socialism and climate,
2. training in organizing methods,
3. networking and arranging joint projects.
Here you can register for the System Change Congress. Early registration makes our planning much easier. The earlier we have a rough estimate of how many people want to come, the better the organization of the events, the sleeping places and the program around the congress will work out.
For the time being, registration is free of charge, but we may not be able to avoid a participation fee. We will get back to you on this. With the registration there are no costs for you.
Die Linke.SDS is not an organization that can fall back on a large budget and many paid positions. In order to print enough material, to bring speakers to Leipzig - in short: to make the congress a reality - we need donations. Our goal: 10,000 € from people who think our project is right and important. Are you ready to support us?
